Abstract – Labquality Days 2018

The FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring System – enriched opportunities in diabetes management

The prevalence of diabetes is achieving epidemic proportions and a multifactorial approach is required to reduce the risk of complications and consequent morbidity and mortality. Glycemic control remains key to reducing microvascular complications and long-term macrovascular disease. However, this risk factor is difficult to control, given the large daily fluctuations in glucose levels secondary to activities and treatment modalities. In particular, overtreatment of hyperglycemia precipitates hypoglycemia, which is associated with adverse clinical outcomes. Moreover, repeated hypoglycemia results in increased glucose variability, which appears to be associated with increased risk of diabetes complications.

The current presentation reviews the relationship between clinical outcomes and various glycemic markers, providing a summary to the background of “The Triangle of Diabetes Care”. The relationship between frequency of glucose testing and glycemic control is also reviewed and the role of flash glucose monitoring in improving glucose levels is addressed.

Key randomized controlled trials investigating the benefits of flash glucose monitoring in type 1 and type 2 diabetes are discussed, including the recently published IMPACT and REPLACE studies. Moreover, real life data of more than 390 million glucose readings and over 64 million scans are presented, analyzing the association between frequency of glucose testing and glycemic control. With the advent of an alternative glucose monitoring strategy, optimizing glucose control in diabetes is becoming easier for both patients and health care professionals, helping to improve outcomes in this high risk population.
