How can laboratories use artificial intelligence while keeping quality and patient safety at the centre of their work?
On 12 February 2027, the international programme at Labquality Days turns its attention to the practical applications and future potential of AI in clinical laboratories.
The session explores how AI can support laboratory processes and clinical decision-making, how the quality of medical algorithms can be assessed, and how laboratories and their professionals can prepare for the changes ahead.
AI is already moving from theory into everyday laboratory work. Speakers will examine how automation and clinical decision support can be incorporated into the testing process without compromising quality.
The programme also considers how the clinical and analytical performance of medical algorithms can be monitored. Practical examples demonstrate how AI agents can support EQA data analysis, internal quality control, laboratory documentation and logistics.
Looking further ahead, the session examines how AI, automation and increasingly data-driven diagnostics may affect professional skills, consultative roles and laboratory operations. The final lecture focuses on the preanalytical phase and explores how AI could help identify risks to sample integrity and strengthen patient safety.
Together, the presentations connect technological development with the priorities that remain fundamental to laboratory medicine: reliable information, effective quality assessment and safe patient care.
Five speakers contribute perspectives from laboratory medicine organisations and clinical laboratories.
A Smarter Laboratory: How Automation, Clinical Decision Support and AI Shape Our Future
Ian Godber is a consultant clinical scientist based in Glasgow and President of the Association for Laboratory Medicine in the United Kingdom. With a long-standing interest in laboratory quality, automation and informatics, he will examine how technology and clinical decision support can help laboratories address challenges across the testing process without compromising quality.

SKML Initiative to Monitor the Clinical and Analytical Quality of Algorithms
Dr Arjen-Kars Boer is a clinical chemist and endocrinologist at Catharina Hospital Eindhoven and Associate Professor in adaptive clinical modelling and clinical decision support at Eindhoven University of Technology. He chairs the recently established SKML section for the external quality assessment of medical algorithms.
Utilizing AI in EQA and Laboratory Workflows
Mikko Helenius, PhD, MSc (Econ), is a Clinical Biochemist and Head of Unit at Vita Laboratoriot Oy. His presentation introduces practical applications of AI agents in quality management and laboratory operations, including the analysis of EQA reports and quality-control data, laboratory manual updates, demand forecasting and logistics planning.
How to Adapt to the Future of Laboratory Medicine – an Attempt at a Prediction
Dr Janne Cadamuro is a laboratory physician and Head of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at University Hospital Salzburg and Paracelsus Medical University. Internationally recognised for his work on extra-analytical processes and diagnostic pathways, he will consider how AI, automation and data-driven diagnostics may reshape laboratories and professional roles over the coming decade—and how laboratory professionals can prepare.
The Vigilant Guard: AI’s Role in Ensuring Sample Integrity and Patient Safety
Dr Habib Özdemir is a medical doctor and medical biochemistry specialist whose multidisciplinary background includes health informatics, electrical engineering and business administration. A member of the EFLM Artificial Intelligence Working Group, he focuses on applying AI and machine learning to clinical laboratory diagnostics, test interpretation and automation. His lecture explores how AI could help identify vulnerabilities in the preanalytical phase and support safer patient care.
The programme also features a short presentation by the winner of the Labquality Days 2027 ePoster exhibition.
The exhibition showcases projects and research in laboratory medicine and quality management. All submitted abstracts are evaluated by the Congress Scientific Committee, and the author of the winning ePoster will be invited to present their topic as part of the scientific programme. The winner will also receive free admission to Labquality Days 2028.
Would you like to share your work with an international audience? Submit your abstract by 30 November 2026.
