AI in laboratory medicine: from decision support to autonomy?
What happens when artificial intelligence moves beyond supporting clinical decisions towards increasingly autonomous laboratory workflows? Professor Damien Gruson will explore this transition in the opening keynote at Labquality Days 2027.
AI is creating new opportunities in laboratory medicine, but its adoption also raises important questions. How can we address data quality, bias, regulation and clinical responsibility? And what could true autonomy mean for the future of diagnostics?
In his keynote, Artificial Intelligence in Laboratory Medicine: From Augmentation to Autonomy?, Gruson will examine how AI enhances today’s practice and what may come next. He will offer a pragmatic perspective on safe, value-driven adoption while maintaining trust in laboratory medicine.
Gruson is Head of the Department of Clinical Biochemistry at Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc in Brussels and Professor at UCLouvain. His work focuses on innovation in laboratory medicine, including artificial intelligence, digital health and emerging technologies.
