Clinical laboratory tests are used for different purposes, eg. diagnosis, guiding and monitoring patient care and screening. Depending on the use, different parameters of performance are emphasized (precision, sensitivity, specificity, time to result). In addition to analytical performance, compatibility with existing instrument and reagent setup and laboratory workflows are considered. Furthermore, value-based medicine emphasizes the improvements in patient outcome and health care sustainability (from economical, social and ecological perspective) as basis of evaluation of different interventions, including laboratory tests.
