Congress Opening
5.2.2026 09:15 - 10:00 | Market Square
At the celebration of 50 years of Labquality Days I open two windows. The first window gives a sight on how we came where we are. There has been an enormous progress during the fifty years in the use of laboratory data information. The improvement of the quality of this information is based on four pillars: Harmonisation of the profession based on the EFLM Academy (previously EC4 Register), Harmonisation of the training based on the EFLM Syllabus for post-graduate training Harmonisation of quality of laboratories based on accreditation according to the ISO standard for medical laboratories which we established (ISO 15189) Harmonisation of laboratory data via External Quality Assessment and commutable materials as in the Calibration 2000 project The four pillars are shortly discussed. Focus is on the fourth pillar, EQA The second window gives a view on the present and the future of quality in medical laboratories. What should we focus on and how can we do that. Who should be involved? Laboratory information is increasingly important in medical care. Think of topics like auto immune diseases, liquid biopsy, and personalised medicine. Quality of laboratory data and information remains the issue to hold on. It is time to use big data in IQA and EQA as in patient based QC set up better EQA for POCT set up evaluation and EQA for home tests involve medical doctors for their input in defining outcome based analytical performance specifications involve the patient, show how we can help in medical care and ask their needs.
