Self-collected capillary blood sampling followed by laboratory testing has been proven to be a viable alternative to venepuncture and could well be a significant contributor to a more patient-centric, personalised, cost-efficient healthcare system, while also significantly reducing the environmental impact of the blood collection process. However, its widespread uptake is not without its problems. Here, we discuss the role of the laboratory, whole process verification, ISO 15189 accreditation, laboratory operation considerations, and finally, problems and pitfalls.
